Project: Stove Computer Modeling, 4th Stove and Heat Exchanger Evaluation Hot Blast Delivery System Evaluation, Strategic Planning

Summary of Scope of Service:
ATSI performed a detailed process study on the Gary No. 4 stove system. ATSI defined the current stove condition with respect to performance and determined the potential benefits from possible process changes such as replacing damaged top checkers and adding a fourth stove. The evaluation also developed opportunities to increase hot blast temperature in the short term without any major capital or maintenance expenditures. In addition, an evaluation was to be made on the merits of utilizing a supplemental heat exchanger to boost hot blast stove performance. ATSI also performed an evaluation of the hot blast delivery system from the hot blast main through the bustle pipe and tuyere stocks to define the system temperature limitations.

ATSI laid out a potential hot blast temperature performance curve over an eight year timeframe for three potential repair scenarios. This information was used to develop blast furnace operating costs and capital costs for the scenarios. This information was used to perform cash flow and NPV comparisons. Simulation runs were made to determine the hot blast performance during a two stove operation. The information indicated that an initial action (installation of 4th stove or
combustor heat exchanger) would eliminate a two stove operation during the stove rebuilding plan resulting in significant economic benefits.

ATSI also assisted U.S. Steel Gary personnel in developing a repair scope for the upcoming outage.
